The Fukuoka Art Museum stands to one side of Ohori Park and specialises in a range of art works, including pieces from many areas of Asia. Ranging from historic Japanese sculptures and antiquities, to striking contemporary paintings by famous modernist artists around the world, the gallery is split over two floors and features plenty to pass the time.

This fascinating museum was established in 1964 with the intention of exhibiting local arts and crafts. The collection at the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art has been extended to include modern art, although the displays still heavily feature Hakata weaving, pottery and more traditional paintings.

This impressive collection of artefacts belongs to Tanakamaru Zenhachi, founder of the Tamaya department store chain. Exhibitions at the Tanakamaru Collection change several times throughout the year, with a previous selection having formerly been on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York, and later at the Seattle Art Museum.
